Create a GitHub account

Introduction

GitHub is the website that will hold your project files when you use Cursor in the browser. Start on github.com. If you are new, use Sign up; if you already have an account, use Sign in. The simplest workshop path is Continue with Google with a Gmail account, then confirm you land on your own GitHub home.

What is a repository

Introduction

A repository — repo for short — is GitHub’s folder for one project. Desktop Cursor needs a folder on your computer; Cursor on the web needs a repo on GitHub. That repo will hold the files and materials you and Cursor create. Start from New repository when you are ready to make one.

Step 03

Name the repo and set visibility

Introduction

On the create form, give the repository a name you will recognise later. Description is optional. Visibility is Public versus Private — not a “feasibility” setting. Public means anyone on GitHub can see the project, like open source. Private means only you, unless you add people by name, similar to sharing a Drive folder. For this workshop, Public is simpler. Then click Create repository.

Step 04

Connect Cursor to GitHub

Introduction

Cursor on the web can only use GitHub repos after the two accounts are linked. If you have never linked them, look for Connect with GitHub. If that button is missing because you connected before, open Dashboard settings: Overview → Source Control, then connect or reconnect GitHub and pick your GitHub account.

Step 05

Select the repository

Introduction

On the web, Agent asks you to Select repository — desktop Cursor says Select folder. Add repositories if the list is empty. When GitHub asks for repository access, grant selected repos only, not every repo on the account. Choose the repo you just created, Save, then refresh until that repo appears in Cursor. After you open it, files from the conversation go into that repo.

Step 06

Use Cursor on the web

Introduction

Once GitHub and Cursor are linked, the web workflow is ordinary Agent work. Prompt Cursor to draft a job description and wait. You will get a text / markdown version; open the markdown link so the right-side preview shows the document. If you need Word, ask it to download a docx and click the file it creates. Setup is the hard part; after that, using Cursor on the web is not especially complex.
