Cursor: first steps in Agents Window

Search Google for "cursor" and open the official site. The homepage recommends the installer that matches your computer — click it to download. If nothing is recommended or the button does nothing, open the downloads page and pick your platform: Mac X64 for most Macs, Windows X64 User for Windows. Open the downloaded file and follow the installer.

When Cursor first opens you may see a light page or a dark page — neither is a mistake. The light page is the Agents window, which feels like ChatGPT: you type a request and AI responds. The dark page is the Editor window, the classic IDE programmers use. This workshop demonstrates in the beginner-friendly Agents window.

The two windows are always one click apart. In the Agents window, click the Editor window button at the top right to switch over. In the Editor window, click the Agents window button in the same spot to come back.

The biggest advantage of Cursor is keeping the files it creates inside one folder you choose. From the Agents window home, click Open folder. Use New folder to create one, or pick a folder you already use — here we open a demo folder called cursor-demo-tool. Check the folder name shown in the window: with many projects, opening the wrong folder means files get saved in the wrong place.
